…was this not done when the Holy Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost? Why was Simon the Magician condemned? Was it not because he came to the apostles and said, “Give me also this authority, that on whomever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit”? For he did not say, “Give me also fellowship of the Holy Spirit,” but “authority,” so that he might sell to others what cannot be sold, which he himself did not possess.

…καταβάντος ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς Πεντηκοστῆς τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος; Διὰ τί κατεκρίθη Σίμων ὁ Μάγος; ἆρ’ οὐ προσελθὼν τοῖς ἀποστόλοις καὶ εἰπών· Δότε κἀμοὶ τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην, ἵνα ᾧ ἂν ἐπιθῶ τὰς χεῖρας, λαμβάνῃ Πνεῦμα ἅγιον; Οὐ γὰρ εἶπε, Δότε κἀμοὶ Πνεύματος ἁγίου κοινωνίαν, ἀλλ’ ἐξουσίαν, ἵνα ἄλλοις πιπράσκῃ τὸ ἄπρατον, ὃ αὐτὸς μὴ ἐκέκτητο.
