Adam is called a figure of the one to come, that is, Christ (Romans 5:14), but a figure by contrast: as the former is understood as a model of sin, so the latter is a model of righteousness. Yet Christ’s incarnation was not the first model of righteousness but the greatest. Even before the Word became flesh, virtues shone in the prophets and many other holy people through their faith in God (John 1:14). When the fullness of time arrived, however, the exact standard of righteousness shone out in Christ (Galatians 4:4). The one foretold as ‘Father of the age to come’ stood forth as the rewarder both of the saints who preceded him and of those who followed (Isaiah 9:6).
