Against Julian 6.23.72

Augustine reports that Julian refers these words to ‘the Jews’ pride,’ as though the apostle had represented in himself people who despised Christ’s gifts as unnecessary for them.

They despised those gifts because he offered forgiveness of sins that they themselves had avoided through the law’s admonition.
