Homilies on Ezekiel, Homilia XI

Origen of Alexandria · c. 240–245 · Baehrens, Origenes Werke VIII = GCS 33 (1925) · Original English Translation

Bodily exercise vs eternal life§1

1Gymnastics sharpens limbs and senses — but bodily training is of little profit for eternal life. Exercise the soul on God’s riddle.

Latin · §1

Exercitio corporum fortitudinem comparat; oculi et aures vegetiores fiunt. Quid prodest ad beatitudinem si corpus roboretur? Emolumentum ad vitam sempiternam quaerendum est.

Pose a riddle to the house of Israel§2

2Son of man, propound a riddle and speak a parable to the house of Israel. Train the inner eye on the allegory. Glory to God. Amen.

Latin · §2

Fili hominis, propone aenigma et dic parabolam ad domum Israel. Gloria Deo. Amen.
