The disciples wonder whether someone brought him food
So the disciples were saying to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” They still hear “food” in a bodily way and miss the Word’s allegory.
The same risk often meets us whenever we hear spiritual things in a bodily way.

Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν; ἔτι γὰρ σωματικώτερον νοοῦσι περὶ τῆς βρώσεως, οὐ συνιέντες τὴν ἀλληγορίαν τοῦ λόγου.
καὶ ἡμῖν δὲ κινδυνεύει πολλάκις τὸ αὐτὸ συμβαίνειν, ὅταν τὰ πνευματικὰ σωματικῶς ἀκούωμεν.
