Abraham died — and the prophets
The Jews’ reply about Abraham and the prophets as having died seems, on the simpler reading, clear.
Did they think the Savior spoke without reason when he said “If anyone keeps my word, he will never see death,” or did they grasp he was not speaking of the more common death?

Δοκεῖ σαφὲς τὸ τῆς ὑπολήψεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἀποκριναμένων περὶ τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ καὶ τῶν προφητῶν ὡς ἀποτεθνηκότων.
Ἆρα ᾤοντο σὺν οὐδενὶ λόγῳ τὸν σωτῆρα εἰρηκέναι τὸ Ἐάν τις τὸν ἐμὸν λόγον τηρήσῃ, θάνατον οὐ μὴ θεωρήσῃ, ἢ ἐνόησαν οὐ περὶ τοῦ κοινοτέρου θανάτου;
