Altar of whole stones on Ebal§1

1After Ai Jesus builds an altar to God on Mount Ebal of whole stones untouched by iron — the law written on stones. Burnt offering and peace offerings. True worship’s form after enemies fall.

Latin · §1

Post Gai Iesus aedificat altare Deo in monte Hebal de lapidibus integris non ferro tactis — lex in lapidibus. Holocaustum et pacifica. Forma cultus veri post hostes prostratos.

Blessing and curse between the mountains§2

2All Israel, elders, scribes, and judges stand on both sides of the ark — half toward Gerizim for blessing, half toward Ebal for curse. Sojourner and native alike. The whole law must be heard.

Latin · §2

Omnis Israel et seniores et scribae et iudices stant hinc atque illinc arcae — dimidii contra Garizim ad benedicendum, dimidii contra Hebal ad maledicendum. Proselytus et indigena. Audienda lex tota.

Gibeonites’ deceit and covenant§3

3The Gibeonites craftily make a covenant with dry bread and burst wineskins — a lie from fear of death. Leaders swear; the people murmur. Yet the oath must be kept. They become woodcutters and water-carriers for the house of God.

Latin · §3

Gabaonitae astu foedus ineunt panibus aridis utribus ruptis — mendacium metu mortis. Principes iurant; populus murmurat. Foedus tamen servandum — iurisiurandi religio. Fiunt lignarii aquarii — servi in domo Dei.

No city made peace except Gibeon§4

4No city made peace with Israel except the Gibeonites; the rest went to war. Peace with Jesus comes only through confession and service. Glory. Amen.

Latin · §4

Non erat civitas quae faceret pacem cum filiis Israel praeter Gabaonitas — ceterae ad bellum. Pax cum Iesu non nisi per confessionem et famulatum. Gloria. Amen.
