On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 10 · §2

Pitch tent on new-moon first month; Moses builds Church-type; Jesus with Moses vs Amalek

Palladius: Clear indeed very well, yet sufficient least of all.

Cyril: Do you wish then that we most eagerly cross again unto that which seems to have been left behind in the narrations upon it? For you think somehow, according to what is likely, that the clarifying word must also be brought alongside, in what manner it has been raised for us, and when and how the righteous-ordinances and laws in it have been composed, and inauguration and sanctification and judgment.

Palladius: Speak then again the things upon each; for you think uprightly.

Cyril: So then I will speak. And you in turn be forgiving, having thought through the complete difficulty of the contemplations, and if somewhere I should chance to say something of the things that have missed exactness and have wandered out from the needed word, reshape and readjust. For I will make you a fellow-taker and helper of my own words.

Palladius: Go trusting God.

Cyril: So then when the works of the holy tent had been thoroughly completed, and indeed also each of the things in it wisely and artfully finished toward the beauty shown on the mountain, the Lord spoke toward Moses, saying, ‘On day one of the month the first, at new-moon, you will set up the tent of the testimony.’ And after other things again: ‘And it came to be,’ he says, ‘in the month the first, in the second year of their going out from Egypt, at new-moon, the tent was stood, and Moses set up the tent.’ So then the ancient tent of the Church thought in Christ has been raised according to what seemed good to God, showing the types very well upon itself. And let us busy ourselves, if it seems good, with the causes of its having been raised rather through Moses, Jesus the son of Nun being silent for the present, though always standing beside all-excellent Moses, and leaping up together upon the mountain Sinai, and also making war and leading out against Amalek through Moses’ voice. For he said somewhere toward him, ‘Choose for yourself strong men, and going out draw up against Amalek tomorrow.’ And he drew up, and he has conquered. What then is the word of this—is it not worthy to examine?

Palladius: Very much so.

Cyril: So then if someone should choose to exact the word of the mystery upon each of the things done as far as possible, marveling he will say, ‘O depth of wealth and wisdom and knowledge of God!’ For observe how subtle and necessary is the mind upon each: for when all-divine Moses runs up unto the mountain, Jesus goes up together; for the Father is not otherwise approachable, except through Son. For it is also true, if it should be said: ‘No one comes toward the Father, except through me.’ In Christ therefore also for the saints themselves is the approach; and no one would be able, as unto a mountain, to leap up unto some high and surpassing contemplation, nor would anyone, I think, come near God, according to manner clearly
