Censer = Christ’s own fragrance; calf/ram/lamb/goat; wagons = Church rests on Christ
Cyril: …of gladness beside your sharers.’ And a spoon again, shape and form of a censer, having been made equal to a censer, and itself also filled of incense; for fragrance and censer is Christ, not having the fragrant from outside, just as indeed also we ourselves by participation of virtue, and of the sanctification according to piety gaining to be in these, but from home as God and in his own nature being rich with the things through which he is marveled, and he fills all the inhabited world of the beyond-world and beyond-creation smell. For being God by nature and truly, and having obtained the smell of the knowledge of the Father in his own nature, he is known very well, so then the spoon is full of incense. In this way then calf and ram, and indeed also lamb, and he-goat from goats are brought forward, the things still brought forward in addition to these, and through all he himself is being written; in the calf, through the very strong, and because of the animals in gentleness and cleanness, the excelling is the calf, and as in greatness of body, the surpassing; and in the intelligible superiority, all the things of Christ are, and he himself the excelling and lying-above with the incomparable difference according to every one; and in the ram, through the perfect, and indeed through the without-evil, in the lamb; ‘For I,’ he says, ‘as a without-evil lamb being led to be slaughtered, did not know’; and in the he-goat, through the slaughter for those who have sinned. For a he-goat for sin is the victim, according to the law; and Emmanuel has entered through death for us, and we have been ransomed of the ancient failings, through which slaughter he endured for us. Or do you not say this also is true?
Palladius: How not?
Cyril: And observe that the calves were brought forward, and have been given unto the works of the tent, that in the camp-strikings they themselves bearing upon wagons, might release the sacred-workers from toil and distress. For the Church rests upon Christ, and he himself bears us, not allowing the sacred and honored race, and the people skilled of the holy works, to fall around unto the toils beyond power. So then thus the things named must be brought up upon Christ. And the things unto a sacrifice of salvation the leaders were bringing forward as it were again instead of themselves, dedicating somehow to the holy tent, and bringing up unto a smell of fragrance to God. And heifers were two, rams five, he-goats five, ewe-lambs five. And a calf, Christ, and heifers again we, and a word upon both, not un-akin, but rather true and clear; for somehow always most leadership-holding is the male, and in honor and glory the all-best beside God, and nature is witness, agreeing the matter. And lesser and having been spread-under is the female, and as it were going behind of the males’ strength and glory. So then in a male calf, Christ is our leader, and we have been yoked-under as it were and in much lesser beside him strength and glory, and incomparable is what intervenes. For even if he has become according to us,
