Place vessels; veil of four pillars; Holies / Holies of holies; laver between
Cyril: ‘And you will set the ark of the testimony, and you will cover the ark with the veil. And you will bring in the table, and you will set forth its setting-forth. And you will bring in the lampstand, and you will set on its lamps. And you will set the golden altar, unto incense opposite the ark. And you will set a covering of veil upon the door of the tent of the testimony, and you will set the altar of the fruit-offerings beside the doors of the tent of the testimony. And you will put around the tent, and you will put around all its things in a circle.’ But it is possible in these to see the holy vessels brought into the holy tent; yet not still also clearly the place fitting and allotted to each. Do you wish then that from the commands upon the tent we gather a subtle and exact knowledge of such things?
Palladius: As most pleasantly.
Cyril: So then God said toward holy Moses: ‘And you will make a veil from hyacinth and purple, and spun scarlet, and twined linen; a woven work you will make it Cherubim. And you will set it upon four undecaying pillars gilded with gold. And their capitals gold, and their bases four silver. And you will set the veil upon the pillars, and you will bring in there inward of the veil the ark of the testimony. And the veil will divide for you between the Holy, and between the Holy of holies. You will cover with the veil the ark of the testimony in the Holy of holies. And you will set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand opposite the table upon the part of the tent toward south. And you will set the table upon the part of the tent toward north. And you will make a curtain for the door of the tent from hyacinth and purple, and spun scarlet, and spun linen, a work of an embroiderer. And you will make for the veil five pillars, and you will gild them with gold; and their capitals gold, and you will cast for them five bronze bases.’ And these things concerning these. And concerning the laver he somehow says thus: ‘Make a bronze laver, and a base for it bronze so as to wash, and you will set it between the tent of the testimony, and between the altar.’ Is the word upon each clear to you?
Palladius: Not at all; for I have been at a loss, know; and what the matter is, I am not able to say.
Cyril: So then upon each of the sayings set forth, having seized what finishes unto the contemplation upon them, I will make the narration clear and most distinct, as I am able. For the holy tent has been raised, O Palladius, according to the desert, as in a double placing and form. And one was the innermost; and its name, the Holies of holies. And as somehow a first-entrance and around it the first, the so-called Holies. And into the innermost tent the ark was set away, having upon four golden pillars a hanging made artfully from hyacinth and purple, and spun scarlet, and twined linen. Having
