By his wounds we are healed; silent lamb; judgment double

Here is what follows in Isaiah: ‘We have been healed by his wounds. All we like sheep have gone astray; each has gone astray in his way. And the Lord has delivered him up for our sins.’ (Isa 53:5-6; 1 Pet 2:24-25) So it is evident that this happened to him by his Father’s will for our salvation. (Acts 2:23)

After that the prophet speaks again of his passion: ‘He does not open his mouth; he was led to the slaughter like a lamb; like a sheep before its shearer he is silent.’ (Isa 53:7; Acts 8:32-35) Thus he declares that he went voluntarily to death.

As for these words of the prophet — ‘In humiliation his sentence of condemnation was taken away’ (Isa 53:8 LXX sense) — they signify the manifestation of his reproaches; it is by reason of his abasements that the reception of the sentence took place. And the sentence was received by some for salvation, and by others for the torments of their reprobation. For one may be received in one way by some and in another by others. So also with the sentence: it has been received by some who undergo it and find in it the torments of reprobation, while for believers it works salvation. (2 Cor 2:15-16)

And that which will be executed by fire will cause the reprobation of unbelievers at the consummation of this world. (2 Thess 1:7-8; 2 Pet 3:7)
