Hands stretched out: cross in Isaiah, Psalm 22, Deuteronomy
Here is how Isaiah speaks of his crucifixion: ‘I have stretched out my hands all day to an unbelieving and rebellious people.’ (Isa 65:2; Rom 10:21) Now this text is an allusion to the cross.
David speaks still more clearly: ‘Hunting dogs have surrounded me; a band of evildoers has circled me; they have pierced my hands and my feet.’ (Ps 22:16) He adds: ‘My heart is like wax melting in my inwards; they have scattered all my bones.’ (Ps 22:14) Then: ‘Deliver my soul from the sword and my body from the nails; for a band of evildoers has risen against me.’ (Ps 22:20) By this he shows plainly that the Christ will be crucified.
Moses had said the same to the people: ‘Your life shall be as it were hanging before you, and you shall tremble day and night and shall not believe in your life.’ (Dt 28:66)
