Ascension: chariots of God; captivity led captive
Risen from the dead, Christ was to ascend to heaven, according to David: ‘The chariot of God has thousands of angels, thousands of charioteers. The Lord is among them in the sanctuary. He has gone up to Zion on high; he has ended captivity and given gifts to human beings.’ (Ps 68:17-18; Eph 4:8)
The prophet calls captivity the abolition of the power of the rebel angels. He has also marked that he gives gifts to human beings — for by ascending he poured out the Spirit. (Acts 2:33; Jn 16:7)
