Suppose Zeno does not allow justice to be called the greatest. He maintains such a close connection and unity among the virtues that, where one is present, he says all are present, and where one is absent, all are absent. True virtue, he says, is perfected by this fourfold union. Even then he will give us great help by teaching that wisdom, courage, and self-control cannot exist without justice. Ecclesiastes speaks in accordance with this truth: 'Whoever sins in one thing will lose many good things' (Ecclesiastes 9:18).
