But with this explanation—which will not enable you either to distort the meaning or to escape—you have lost not only your tricks but also the manufactured hostility you were inflaming against us. You used to claim that we gravely offended against the faith by saying this: Christ’s grace must indeed be administered uniformly, and its words and institutions must not be unsettled. It confers the gifts of adoption, sanctification, and advancement equally on all whom it initiates. Yet it does not find everyone who approaches it in the same state of guilt. Those who have sinned by their own will—without whose activity no sin can exist—it frees from guilt and makes good out of evil. But it does not accuse the innocent, blessed in the unstained freshness of their first age, of any act of an evil will, since it knows they have had no experience of such a will.
