‘Grace,’ he says, ‘is from many offenses to justification’ (Romans 5:16). You say infants are liable for no more than one sin. You therefore see praise of grace limping in their case, because it finds no multitude of sins whose forgiveness can earn it praise. Consequently, the apostle Paul’s words, ‘But grace is from many offenses to justification’ (Romans 5:16), are exposed as utterly false in infants’ condition. Where will you try to jump from here? No doubt you will say—for your previous argument has disclosed this intention—that the apostle’s statement, ‘But grace is from many offenses to justification’ (Romans 5:16), is fulfilled in adults, who are proved liable for many offenses through the movement of their own will; but that in infants justification comes not from many offenses but from one.
