As though to crown this with a wickedness all his own, he added that God inflicted a punishment that was a lure and fuel for sin: a law in our members fighting unconquered against the law of our mind (compare Romans 7:23). By this sort of vengeance God would multiply crimes, not punish them. Having been angry at the evil will by which the sin was committed, he would make sinning a necessity thereafter. Let Manichaean frenzy decide what kind of judgment this is. At least it is clear that this judge invented by Augustine only pretends to abhor sin. In reality, he clings to sins with such affection that they could not find a more attentive nurse.
