Do not touch me; faith and life together
Origen went on: I am not of such stature as to say that just as the body could not go down into Hades — even if those who call Jesus' body spiritual say this — so neither could the spirit go down into Hades, and therefore he gave the spirit as a deposit to the Father until he should rise from the dead.
Having committed this deposit to the Father, he receives it back. When? Not at the same moment as the resurrection, but immediately after the resurrection. Bring me the gospel writing as witness. The Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Mary met him, and he says to her: Do not touch me. For he wanted the one who touched him to touch him as complete, so that by touching him complete she might be benefited — the body from the body, the soul from the soul, the spirit from the spirit. For I have not yet gone up to the Father. He goes up to the Father and comes to the disciples. So then he goes up to the Father. For what? To receive the deposit back.
The matters of the faith, as many as have been indicated to us, have been examined together. But one must know that we are judged in the divine court not concerning faith only, as if life were not examined, nor concerning life only, as if faith were not searched. When both are set right we are justified; when both are not set right we are punished for both. There are some who will not be punished for both but for the one: some for the faith as having stumbled, but not for the life as not having been set right; and others, conversely, will not be punished for the faith, but will be punished for the life, as having lived contrary to the right word.
