Jerusalem unclean as in menstruation; Zion’s idle hands
He has shown the uncleanness of Jerusalem through sin as through menstruation. And “in the midst” he says either of Zion and of Jacob, or of the whole mountain (for she has been built in a part of it) and of the whole people—Jacob now signifying the twelve scepters. And twofold according to the wording one can take Zion and Jerusalem: either the places or the inhabitants. But if Zion is a place, her hands are the works—for example farming and whatever is handmade—he says spread out and not drawn together nor doing the fitting work with hands, as in an idle and deserted country. And if he means the inhabitants, hands would be farmers and workers, not drawing the hands together unto works because of the things that have surrounded. And if the hands of Zion are tropologized, how much more the members of God according to the scripture. And the mountain itself, so to speak, with the nation groans, having for comfort neither God nor a holy man.

Klagel. Jerem. 1, 17.
