Elders silent in fear; virgins look down; virtue turned earthy
He narrates painful sights that have come to be in the place of gladness; for by fear they were not permitting even the elders to lament, and they prepared the first virgins to look unto the earth, lest appearing they draw them by force from the beauty in which they were foremost. And you would also say those long ago elders in virtue—for which they were so called—having become earthy and settled in irrational passions, still do nothing according to reason, and having made earthy the leading spirit in them and having made the sobriety they once had worthy of mourning and having corrupted reasonings which formerly they were keeping incorrupt.
