On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 10 · §27

Father approachable only through Son; eighth day = resurrection age; milk = immature

Cyril: So then through legal worship the Father is unapproachable, after the perfection in Christ, and he is approachable through the Son alone. Therefore also he was saying, ‘No one comes toward the Father, except through me.’ And that everything not in Christ is both unsacrificed and incomplete, and acceptable and most sacred is the through him and in him, would also become clear through what the law says in the Exodus: ‘You will not boil a lamb in its mother’s milk’; and in the Leviticus: ‘And Lord spoke toward Moses saying: A calf or sheep or goat which should be born, will also be seven days under its mother. And on the eighth day and beyond, it will be accepted unto gifts a fruit-offering to the Lord, and a calf and a sheep, it and its child you will not slaughter in one day.’ So then he does not allow to slaughter a lamb newly-born and still under-breast, showing that the still incomplete and as in understanding short and weak is not yet sacred; and still unacceptable on account of this to God. Such some were both unwise and small-knowing, toward whom all-divine Paul writes: ‘For also owing to be teachers through the time, again you have need of the one teaching you what are the elements of the beginning of the oracles of God, and you have become having need of milk, not of solid food; and the solid food is of perfect ones.’ So then still incomplete is the in milk and under breast, according at least to the in understanding I mean and spiritual stoutness; and let the word concerning these go for us again, as from a type of the things in sense and clear, upon the things beyond sense and intelligible, yet that all things have come to be in Christ and in perfection and acceptance, you will understand very well. For the animals being brought forward and dedicated to God, he says must be seven days under the mother, and on the eighth day and beyond, will be a gift, and unto a fruit-offering to God.

Palladius: The word is not very clear.

Cyril: Or do you not say that the eighth is the resurrection day of the Savior, and as a beginning of a new age, with the according to law as in the first seven days having ridden past?

Palladius: I say.

Cyril: So then still unsacred and not-to-be-brought-forward is the as in time the according to the law clearly the in fleshly worship; and already a gift and well-acceptable to God is every thing remaining in Christ according to the eighth and beyond. For unceasing is the calling in Christ, having beginning the resurrection. And knowing this the Son himself was saying, sometimes, ‘When I am lifted up from the earth, I will drag all toward myself,’ and sometimes, ‘Amen I say to you, unless the grain having fallen into the earth should die, it remains alone; and if it should die, it bears more fruit.’

Palladius: You have spoken uprightly. And the not needing to be destroyed-together

{ΚΥΡ.} Ἦ γὰρ οὐχὶ τὴν ὀγδόην τὴν ἀναστάσιμον τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμέραν εἶναι φὴς, καὶ ἀρχὴν ὥσπερ αἰῶνος νέου, παριππεύσαντος τοῦ κατὰ νόμον ὡς ἐν ἡμέραις ἑπτὰ ταῖς πρώταις;
