On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 11 · §3

Aaron helps weak Moses; priestly garments = put on Christ

Cyril: …Aaron your brother, and according to another manner, I think, knowing the matter not unhelpful unto benefit as in spiritual thinking; and understand what I say. For Moses was being sent, leading Israel out from the misery in Egypt. Then seeing the attempt standing far beyond human power, and beyond measures of the strength and eloquence present for him, he was entreating saying: ‘Behold I am not well-spoken before yesterday, nor before the third, nor from when you began to speak to your attendant; thin-voiced and slow-tongued am I.’ (Exodus 4:10–16) And with God toward these saying, ‘Who gave a mouth to a human? who made hard-of-hearing and deaf, seeing and blind? Did not I Lord God? And now go, and I will open your mouth.’ (Philippians 4:13) Being worsted by the superiority of the achievements he was fearing again, and indeed was saying, ‘I beg, Lord, appoint another, the one able, whom you will send.’ (Exodus 28:2–3) And God was appointing at that time at once Aaron, unto a type of Christ who knows how to set upright all things easily; and Israel has been ransomed not otherwise, unless as a fellow-worker for Moses’ thin-speech and weakness again, as in an image in Aaron, Christ has been given; thus also here you will think. For perfecting the weak of the law in Christ, he brought Aaron alongside unto priesthood, and joins him usefully to blessed Moses. For neither unto ransom would the law suffice, nor indeed unto being able to perfect unto sanctification those who have been ransomed. And ransom and sanctification is Christ, with saints working-together; just as indeed Moses with Aaron in Egypt then, and with Aaron himself the sons. And with the high priest and leader of all, Christ, the all-divine disciples were also working-together intelligibly. Not running together as with one weak, though being able to set upright all things, but as having been called toward service and chosen by merit, and gaining from him the well-strong upon all. And all-divine Paul will witness saying: ‘I am strong for all things in the Christ who empowers me.’ (Romans 13:14)

Palladius: So then chosen and by name have Aaron and the rest been called toward sacred-liturgy.

Cyril: And in addition to these at least he was legislating bright and priest-fitting garments to be constructed for them saying: ‘And you will make a holy stole for Aaron your brother unto honor and glory, and you speak to all the wise in understanding, whom I have filled with spirit of sense, and they will make the holy stole of Aaron unto the holy, in which he will priest for me.’ (Isaiah 61:10) So then all-wise Paul advises those justified in faith that the truly holy and from-heaven stole must be put on writing: ‘Put on our Lord Jesus Christ.’ For this indeed the prophet Isaiah has cried beforehand saying as from person of the Church, ‘Let my soul rejoice upon the Lord, for he has put on me a garment of salvation and a tunic of gladness.’ So then a garment the unto
