Ammon/Edom refuse bread; heretics kin who will not help

Palladius: I do not very much understand what you say.

Cyril: You understand very well, and not unto long. For Ammonites having become of Esau, were near-sown and same-blooded to the sons from Jacob, I say to Israel; but also somehow neglecting the nature itself, those from Esau were falsifying the manner of kinship, and fearful and unbending were thereafter bearing-down toward those near and from blood, that is of the Israel. For when departing from the of Egyptians he was running-past the land of the Ammonites, he was entreating the dweller as a brother to let-pass, or for them to dart-through and to pity those having been wronged; and he was not releasing. And what do I say this? Rather even in arms, or also he lifts a war. And he would have wronged terribly, if not according to a divine voice, Israel has bent-away; and the having-been-written holds thus: ‘And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh toward a king of Edom, saying: Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the labor having found us. And our fathers went down into Egypt, and we sojourned in Egypt more days, and the Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers. And we cried up toward Lord, and Lord hearkened to our voice, and having sent messengers, led us out from Egypt. And now we are in Kadesh city, from a part of your borders. We will go past through your land. We will not go through through fields, nor through vineyards, nor will we drink water from your pits. By a royal way we will walk; we will not turn aside right nor left, until we should go past your borders. And Edom said toward him: You will not go through through me. And if not, in war I will go out unto a meeting for you.’ (Numbers 20:14–21) And after other things: ‘And Edom went out unto a meeting for him in a heavy crowd, and in a strong hand. And Edom did not wish to give to Israel to go past through his borders. And Israel turned aside from him.’ (Deuteronomy 23:3–4) So then is the word thereafter not clear and vivid?

Cyril: For you do not understand that having been joined to those from Israel by a relation according to near-kinship, unloving and hard, and having differed nothing from wild beasts, they were being convicted from the matters themselves? For needing to pity as brothers, being in sweats and labors, they go out having devastated. Therefore the law says: ‘They will not go into a church of Lord, because of their not meeting you with bread and water, with you going out from Egypt,’ that is, through the very unsympathetic, and having gone out from wild ones unto unholiness of manners. And you may see that such toward us the ones having chosen to walk-straight are the peoples and leaders of the heretics.
