Book 8 opens: still brother-love; Exod 22 calf/sheep theft
ON ADORATION AND WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH — BOOK EIGHT. Still concerning the love toward the brothers, and against the one who steals a calf or sheep.
Cyril: From every side then already, O Palladius, it is present for you to understand that the ancient law also commands that the words of the mystagogy be made both upright and exceedingly exact. And setting the matter as not without penalty for those accustomed to deceive some of the simpler ones, he said again: ‘And if someone should steal a calf or a sheep, and should slaughter or sell it, he will repay five calves instead of the calf, and four sheep instead of the sheep. And if the thief should be found in the dig-through, and having been struck should die, there is no murder for him; but if the sun should rise upon him, he will be liable, he will be killed in return. And if it should not exist for him, let him be sold instead of the theft; and if the theft should be caught and found in his hand, from donkey even unto sheep, alive, he will repay them double.’

ΠΕΡΙ ΤΗΣ ΕΝ ΠΝΕΥΜΑΤΙ ΚΑΙ ΑΛΗΘΕΙΑ ΠΡΟΣΚΥΝΗΣΕΩΣ ΚΑΙ ΛΑΤΡΕΙΑΣ ΛΟΓΟΣ ΟΓΔΟΟΣ. Ἔτι περὶ ἀγάπης τῆς εἰς ἀδελφοὺς, καὶ κατὰ τοῦ κλέπτοντος μόσχον ἢ πρόβατον. Πανταχόθεν δὴ οὖν, ὦ Παλλάδιε, πάρα σοι νοεῖν, ὡς ὀρθούς τε καὶ ἀκριβεῖς ἄγαν ποιεῖσθαι κελεύει τῆς μυσταγωγίας τοὺς λόγους καὶ ὁ πάλαι νόμος. Οὐκ ἀζήμιον δὲ τοῖς ἐξαπατᾷν εἰωθόσι τῶν ἁπλουστέρων τινὰς τὸ χρῆμα τιθεὶς, ἔφη πάλιν· «Ἐὰν δέ τις κλέψῃ μόσχον ἢ πρόβατον, καὶ σφάξῃ ἢ ἀποδῶται, πέντε μόσχους ἀποτίσει ἀντὶ τοῦ μόσχου, καὶ τέσσαρα πρόβατα ἀντὶ τοῦ προβάτου. Ἐὰν δὲ ἐν τῷ διορύγματι εὑρεθῇ ὁ κλέπτης, καὶ πληγεὶς ἀποθάνῃ, οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτῷ φόνος· ἐὰν δὲ ἀνατείλῃ ὁ ἥλιος ἐπ' αὐτῷ, ἔνοχος ἔσται, ἀνταποθανεῖται. Ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ὑπάρχῃ αὐτῷ, πραθήτω ἀντὶ τοῦ κλέμματος· ἐὰν δὲ καταληφθῇ καὶ εὑρεθῇ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ κλέμμα, ἀπό τε ὄνου καὶ ἕως προβάτου ζῶντα, διπλᾶ ἀποτίσει αὐτά.»
