This month is the beginning of months
and it is for the one who crosses then a beginning of months, when the month of the crossing from Egypt comes to be. So for him a beginning of another birth comes to be, a new way of life coming to be for the one who has left the darkness and is coming to the light. I speak fittingly with a view to the sign given through water to those who have hoped in Christ, which has been named a washing of regeneration. For what else does regeneration mean but the beginning of another birth?

καὶ ἔστι τ[ῷ διαβαίνοντι] τότε ἀρ[χὴ μηνῶν, ὅτε γίνε-ται] ὁ μὴν ὁ τ[ῆς] δια[βάσε]ως τ[ῆς] Α[ἰγ]ύπτου, ὥσπε[ρ α]ὐτῷ γ[εν]νήσεως γίν[εται ἀρ]χή [τις ἑ]τέρας, κ[αινῆς π]ολιτ[είας γι]νομένη[ς καταλί]πον[τι] τὸ σκότος κ[αὶ ἐρχ]ομένῳ πρὸς τὸ φῶς, λ[έγω] οἰκείω[ς] ὡς πρὸς τὸ σύμ[βολ]ον τὸ δι' ὕδατος διδόμ[ενον] τοῖς εἰς X(ριστὸ)ν ἠλπικόσ[ι]ν, ὃ [λο]υτρὸν παλιγγενεσίας ὠνόμασται.
