On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 15 · §15

Restitution + ram; full justification in Christ; Zacchaeus; ready heart

Cyril: …he wronged something the neighbor, or found a loss, and should lie about it, and should swear unjustly about one from all, of which if the human should do, so as to sin in these. And it will be whenever if he should sin, and should fault, and should give-back the seizure, which he seized, or the injustice, which he wronged, or the deposit, which was deposited for him, or the loss, which he found from every deed, about which he swore unjustly, also he will repay it the capital, and the fifth he will add upon it, whose it is, to him he will give-back on which day he should be convicted, and of his faulting he will bring to the Lord a ram from the sheep unblemished, of price, unto which he faulted. And the priest will propitiate about him before Lord, and it will be forgiven for him about one from all which he did and faulted in it.’ (Leviticus 6:2-7) Do you see of the cleansing in equal running, and being fulfilled through both the manner? For he will pay-out with surplus, and with bringing-forward of a ram; both the charges unto God, and those unto brothers and same-race the law very well was ordering to beat-back. And not somehow a partial justification in Christ, but rather a perfect washing-off of the accustomed to stain; therefore also he was saying: ‘Amen, amen I say to you, that the one believing unto me, has life eternal, and unto judgment he does not come, but he has stepped-across from the death unto the life.’ (John 5:24) And if the being-judged he has fled-through, the one having the in faith justification adoptive through Christ, every somehow necessity to say that he ran-through the charges; and a manner of accusations would be strong none, against at least such a one, I say. ‘For God the one justifying, who the one condemning?’ (Romans 8:33-34) So then for the having-been-grieved of the brothers, through deeds apologizing, the in Christ justification most-ready we will find. Thus also Zacchaeus the tax-collector having been called unto apostleship, not as he will follow only the one having called was promising, but also all as many as he wronged to give-back in fourfold. (Luke 19:8) For one must I think those about to make in at least themselves indwelling through the Spirit Christ, to wash-off-before filths, and to wipe-off-before charges, and bright thus and unstained to show for him the own soul, just as indeed also the divine Melodist having come in beauty of such virtue, was crying-up saying: ‘Ready my heart, O God, ready my heart, I will sing and will psalm.’ (Psalm 57:7) For just as on clean on the one hand being the wools the dyes settle-in, and if of filth something goes-with a remnant, easily-cast-out immediately the having-been-judged-in, and firm the seat not having in them; thus also the participation of Christ, into the holy and clean on the one hand enters souls, and into those not thus having, not even altogether would it settle-in; ‘For a holy spirit of wisdom will flee craft,’ according to the having-been-written, ‘and will not dwell in a body indebted to sins.’ (Wisdom 1:4-5) So then healing the having-been-wronged, and with the unto friendship right-doings shearing-off the griefs of the brothers, of a cause ourselves of every we will release, and the in Christ we will gain forgiveness.

Palladius: Most-rightly you spoke.
