On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 9 · §10

Shewbread for priests; dough firstfruit; lampstand = Emmanuel begins

Cyril: …it will be set before the Lord through all before the sons of Israel, an age-long covenant; and it will be for Aaron and his sons. And they will eat them in a holy place; for this is Holies of holies of them, and from the things sacrificed to the Lord, an age-long lawful thing.’ And in Numbers, as again one bread for us—the one from heaven and from us; for the Word, being God by nature, became according to us, and tented among us—he was showing, saying toward the hierophant Moses: ‘Speak to the sons of Israel, and you will say toward them: In your going into the land which I lead you into there, and it will be, when you yourselves eat from the breads of the land, you will take away a take-away set-apart for the Lord—a firstfruit of your dough; a bread take-away you will set it apart as a take-away from a threshing-floor; thus you will take away a firstfruit of your dough, and you will give to the Lord a take-away unto your generations.’ And without toil one would somehow look down through these upon the mystery of the truth. And it will be said by us in its own time thinly and exactly, the word having transferred for us unto another sweat of writing. Yet that, I think somewhere, one would set down for us for the present at least, O Palladius.

Palladius: What sort of thing do you say?

Cyril: For making Emmanuel clear for us in many forms, he also molds him again through another word. For toward Moses he says: ‘And you will make a lampstand from pure gold; turned you will make the lampstand; its stem and the little reeds, and the bowls, and the sphere-makers, and the lilies will be from it. Six little reeds from the second side.’ And again upon these having added the things finishing unto adornment and need for the craft—I mean lilies, and sphere-makers and little nuts—he was calling out again: ‘Whole turned, from one pure gold; and you will make its lamps seven, and you will set its lamps. And they will shine from the one face. And its funnel and its bases from pure gold; you will make all these vessels of a talent of pure gold. See, you will make according to the type shown to you in the mountain.’ So then the gold lampstand holds a type of Christ. For by nature and truth the Son is God; and one must liken to gold, as we were also defining in the things above, the divine brightness and superiority. And turned because Emmanuel is most beautiful and beyond every word, as far as concerns the intelligible fair form. For it has been written that ‘He is fair in beauty beside the sons of humans.’ So then the lampstand having been turned out unto a conspicuous form—clearly the God-fitting—would show very well Emmanuel. And unto right and left, as little reeds grown from a tree, he says they spring up together with the middle stem, and are raised unto height the equal-balanced. For the Only-begotten, being one by nature, and in the simplicity according to essence as God, seems to be many-fold in differing energies, but nothing mixed-in or alien
