Cyril of Alexandria: Fragments on Matthew · §28

Matthew 4:3

Christ did not obey the devil so as to turn the stones into loaves, because that request was not for the devil’s benefit. He was not asking so that he might believe and become again the angel he once was — for he is unrepentant — but so that he might drag Christ into vain glory. Knowing this, the Savior did not obey him.
