Every wineskin will be filled with wine

What the prophet is commanded by God to say ought to be worthy of God. Yet if we remain on the letter it does not appear worthy of God, so that someone hearing the letter might say: these letters are folly. But a psychic person will say this; for 'the psychic person does not receive the things of the Spirit of God; for they are folly to him.'

Look then at what the wording says. 'And you shall say to this people: Thus says the Lord the God of Israel'—what 'the Lord the God of Israel' says, let it be worthy of the Lord of Israel—'Every wineskin will be filled with wine. And if they say to you, “Shall we not know, knowing, that every wineskin will be filled with wine?”' And those who answer, if they say these things standing on the bare wording, claim to know that 'every wineskin will be filled with wine,' and they lie. For not every wineskin will be filled with wine. There are wineskins filled with oil or with some other liquid substance. So some lie; for not every wineskin will be filled with wine. And the people answers saying: 'Shall we not know, knowing, that every wineskin will be filled with wine?'—words that will receive an interpretation of this kind, as far as we can.

If we know the differences among wines and what is said about them, and accordingly look at the wineskins, we will see that it is true that every wineskin will be filled with wine. For whether someone is good—let us name him so among wineskins, a wineskin—he will be filled with wine according to his own goodness. Or whether he is, by comparison of wineskins and the judgment about them, wicked, he too according to his wickedness will be filled with wicked wine. How then can we take from Scripture the different wines? About the worse ones it is written like this: 'For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, and their shoot from Gomorrah.

Their grape is a grape of gall; a cluster of bitterness to them; their wine is the rage of dragons, and the incurable rage of asps.' And about the better ones: 'Your cup that makes drunk is as the strongest,' and Wisdom calls to her own mixing-bowl saying: 'Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine I have mixed for you.' So there is wine from Sodom, and there is wine that Wisdom mixes. And again: 'A vineyard came to be for the beloved on a horn in a rich place,' planted by God, the vine called Sorek—choice and marvelous. And there is also a vine of the Egyptians, which God strikes according to what is written: that 'God struck their vine with hail, and their mulberry trees with frost.'

ἐὰν εἰδῳμεν τàς τῶν οἴνων διαφορὰς καὶ τὰ λεγόμενα περὶ αὐτῶν, καὶ ἀκολούθως αὐτοῖς περὶ τῶν ἀσκῶν ὀψόμεθα ὅτι ἀληθές ἐστι τὸ πᾶς ἀσκὸς πληρωθήσεται οἴνου. εἴτε γὰρ ἀγαθός τίς έστιν, ἕν οὕτως ὀνομάσωμεν, έν ἀσκοῖς ἀσκός, πληρωθήσεται οἴνου κατὰ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀγαθότητα. εἴτε ἐστίν ὡς ἐν συγκρίσει ἀσκῶν καὶ τῇ κρίσει τῇ περὶ αὐτῶν, μοχθηρός, καὶ αὐτὸς κατὰ τὴν μοχθηρίαν αὐτοῦ πληρωθήσεται οἴνου μοχθηροῦ. πῶς οὖν ἔστιν ἀπὸ τῆς γραφῆς λαβεῖν περὶ τῶν διαφόρων οἵνων; περὶ μὲν τῶν χειρόνων τοιαῦτα γέγραπται· «ἐκ γàρ ἀμπέλου Σοδόμων ἡ ἄμπελος αὐτῶν, καὶ ἡ κληματὶς αὐτῶν ἐκ Γομόρρας.
