Glory to God by deeds, not by little words
'Give' then 'glory to the Lord our God.' How do we give glory to the Lord our God? I do not seek giving glory to the Lord our God in voices and little words, but in deeds the one who gives glory to the Lord God gives glory to him. In temperance glorify God; in righteousness, in well-doing glorify God; give glory to God in courage and endurance; give glory to God in piety and holiness and the remaining virtues. And if these things are so and someone thus glorifies God, if I say the opposites, do not think I blaspheme; for I will also set Scripture as witness of those.
The temperate glorifies God; the intemperate dishonors God. For like Nebuchadnezzar he overturns the temple of God and 'destroys the temple of God' and 'through the transgression of the law dishonors God' (this wording too is apostolic). So the sinner puts dishonor around God. And questions about providence are sought, so that some doubt whether there is providence—for no other reason than through wickedness. Take away wickedness, and you do not stumble at providence. But those who stumble at providence say these things up and down: why so many adulterers and so many soft ones, why so many atheists and impious? And those who generated the dishonor for providence, the stumbling-blocks for God, the blasphemy against the one who made the world, are the sinners. So some give glory to God; but those who do the things contrary to God's glory through sins give no glory to God.

English follows Erich Klostermann, Origenes Werke III (GCS, 1901). A second transcription of that same edition (First1KGreek TEI) was checked; where the TEI drops or garbles a line, the page image wins. This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.
