Enslaved among enemies; do not be long-suffering toward them

'And I will enslave you among all your enemies in the land which you did not know.' That people has been enslaved among the enemies, and has come to be in the land which they did not know. 'For a fire has been kindled from my wrath; it will burn upon you.'

After these things and the words of the threats spoken toward the people, the one who prayed above completes the prayer and joins to what was said beforehand these things: 'You know, Lord; remember me and visit me, and acquit me from those who pursue me—not unto long-suffering.' And let the prophet say these things, pursued by those who were convicted, hated by those who do not make room for the truth; for he became an enemy to those who hear, speaking truly to them. And let our Savior also say the same, who was also pursued by the people and says: 'Not unto long-suffering.' What is 'not unto long-suffering'? You were always long-suffering toward the people upon their sins, but upon the things dared against me do not be long-suffering. And truly God was not long-suffering.

If you examine the times of the passion and of Jerusalem's fall and of the city's demolition, and how God abandoned that people since they killed the Christ, you will see that he no longer used long-suffering toward the people. And if you want, hear: from the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar until the demolition of the temple forty-two years were completed. For some short time had to be granted for repentance, especially because of those from the people who were going to believe from the signs and wonders that would come to be through the apostles.

This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.
