Jeremiah from childhood; Christ the true prophet to the nations

But 'Woe is me, mother, as whom did you bear me, a man judged and distinguished in all the earth?' I do not think fits the other prophets to say as it does Jeremiah. For many of the prophets after some times, after wickedness, after sins, having changed began to prophesy, but Jeremiah prophesies from childhood. And it is possible to give an example from what is written. Isaiah did not hear: 'Before I formed you in the belly I know you, and before you came out from the womb I sanctified you; I have set you a prophet to nations'; nor did he say: 'I do not know how to speak, for I am younger,' but when he saw the vision written in his prophecy, he saw and said: 'Woe is me, wretched am I, for having unclean lips I dwell in the midst of a people having unclean lips, and I have seen with my eyes the king, the Lord of hosts,' 'and one of the Seraphim was sent,' he says, 'to me, and touched my lips and said: Look, I have taken away your lawless deeds, and this will cleanse your sins.' So after the sins which he did earlier, later Isaiah became worthy of the Holy Spirit and prophesied. And upon another you would find the like. But Jeremiah is not so; for still from swaddling clothes adorned with the prophetic Spirit he prophesied from childhood.

Or, forcing it, shall we say 'in all the earth' instead of in all Judea? For his prophecy while he was prophesying then did not reach into all the earth. Or perhaps, as upon countless other places we showed Jeremiah to have been spoken in place of our Lord Jesus Christ, so also here we will say. At the beginning I noted: 'Look, I have set you for nations and kingdoms, to root out and to tear down and to destroy and to build and to plant.' Jeremiah did not do this. But Jesus Christ rooted out the kingdoms of the earth's sins and tore down the buildings of wickedness and made, instead of those kingdoms, righteousness and truth to reign in our souls.

So just as those things fitted better to be referred to Christ than to Jeremiah, so I think also many other things and these.

This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.
