A man judged and examined in all the earth

First let us look from the prophetic word, then also according to the ascent of sense, if it is a prophet’s proclamation. 'Woe is me, mother, as what man did you bear me—a man judged and examined in all the earth?' O mother, as what did you bring me forth—a man judged against all who are on the earth, and examined against all who are on the earth?

For the prophetic task lay before this prophet, and before Isaiah, and before the rest: to teach, to rebuke, and to turn people back. So it lay before this prophet too to examine, to rebuke, to judge—being able both to judge and to be judged with sinners—and to rebuke the sins of the people. And what need is there even to say what those from the people did to them? They stoned one, they sawed another, they killed another 'between the temple and the altar,' and this one, when they were rebuked, they threw into a pit of mire.

And in all of this our Savior has done the same, and better than these, being Lord of prophets. For if he himself was scourged and crucified and handed over by the Jews, or by the teachers of the Jews and the leader of the people, he said: 'Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites.' And he adds upon each: 'Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites.' And he adds upon each 'Woe' and 'therefore' this and that.

And we too, if we are eager for the blessings of the prophets, let us do the same things, so that, because we speak and are judged before many people, we may also say: 'Woe is me, mother, as what man did you bear me—a man judged and examined in all the earth?'

A second transcription of that same edition (First1KGreek TEI) was checked; where the TEI drops or garbles a line, the page image wins. This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.
