Why the sins are repaid double
But someone among the hearers will say: Narrate also the 'double.' Grant that I first receive the sins, so that when I have received the sins, afterward what was said by the apostle may be fulfilled: 'If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire'—why then do I receive the sins 'double'? But it must be said that 'the servant who knew his master’s will and did not do according to his will will be beaten' not with few blows but with 'many.' Therefore it is right that those from the nations who sin receive their sins simply, but that we receive our stumbles double. For 'if we sin willingly after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a zeal of fire about to eat the adversaries.'
The things about those who will be fished and hunted and will first receive double their sins were prophesied. After these things the calling of the nations is prophesied more clearly—not of those being called but of those already called, and not of those who do not know what they will confess and what they will give thanks for, but of those who have already learned. For in the former things we were learning that they were called, were fished, were hunted; what they will suffer is in the latter things. Let us see what he prophesies about us who are already learning to pray—or rather who have learned.

This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.
