Covenant and Spiritual Liberation

The word is addressed to men of Judah, to those dwelling in Jerusalem. This is the church.

For the city of God is the church, the vision of peace, in which peace is present, which we have brought, if we are children of peace, it increases and is seen. Therefore, hear the words of this covenant, and speak to men of Judah and those dwelling in Jerusalem. And you will say to them: Thus says the Lord God of Israel, a man who does not hear the words of the covenant which I commanded your fathers; who especially hears 'the words of the covenant which the God commanded your fathers'? Does the believer in him or those who do not believe in Moses, shown by not believing in the Lord? For the Savior says to them: 'If you believe in Moses, you would believe in me, for he wrote about me. If you do not believe in his writings, how will you believe in my words?' Therefore, those did not believe in Moses, but we believe in Christ, and we believe in the covenant through Moses, and it is said to us that we may not be cursed; cursed is the man who does not hear the words of the covenant which I commanded your fathers.

ἔστιν Ι γὰρ ἡ πόλις τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ ἐκκλησία, ἡ Ὅρασις τῆς εἰρήνης, ἐν αὐτῇ έστιν] ἡ εἰρήνη ἥν ἤγαγεν ἡμῖν, εἴγε ἐσμὲν τέκνα εἰρήνης, πληθύνεται καὶ ὁρᾶται. «Ἀκούσατε« οὖν τοὺς λόγους τῆς διαθήκης ταύτης, καὶ λαλή- σατε πρὸς ἄνδρας Ἰύδα καὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ἱερουσαλήμ. καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς· τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ ἄνθρωπος ὃς οὐκ ἀκούσεται τῶν λόγων τῆς διαθήκης, ἡς ἐνετειλάμην τοῖς πατράσιν ὑμῶν( τίς μάλιστα ἀκούει «τῶν λόγων τῆς διαθήκης ἧς ἐνετείλατο ὁ θεὸς τοῖς πατράσιν«; ἆρά γε οἱ πιστεύοντες ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἢ οἱ μηδὲ Μωσεῖ πιστεύειν ἀποδεικνύμενοι ἐκ τοῦ μὴ πε- πιστευκέναι ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον; φησὶ γὰρ ὁ σωτὴρ πρὸς ἐκείνους. «εἰ ἐπιστεύετε Μωσεῖ, ἐπιστεύετε ἐπιστεύετε ἂν ἐμοί· περὶ γὰρ ἐμοῦ ἐκεῖνος ἔγραψεν. εἰ δὲ τοῖς ἐκείνου γράμμασιν οὐ πιστεύετε, πῶς τοῖς ἐμοῖς ῥήμασι πιστεύσετε«; οὐκοῦν ἐκεῖνοι εἰς Μωσῆν οὐ πεπιστεύκασιν, ἡμεῖς δὲ πιστεύοντες εἰς Χριστὸν πιστεύομεν τῇ διαθήκῃ τῇ διὰ Μωσέως, καὶ πρὸς ἡμᾶς λέγεται, ἵνα μὴ κατάρατοι γενώμεθα· ἐπικατάρατος ὁ ἄν- θρωπος ὅς οὐκ ἀκούσεται τῶν λόγων τῆς διαθήκης, ἧς ἐνετειλάμην τοῖς πατράσιν((.

ἐκεῖνοι οὖν ἔχουσιν τὸ ἐπικατάρατοι εἶναι. οὐ γὰρ ἤκουσαν «τῆς διαθήκης, ἧς ἐνετείλατο ὁ θεὸς τοῖς πατράσιν. «Ἐν ἡμέρᾳ« φησὶν «ᾖ ἀνήγαγον αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, ἐκ τῆς καμίνου τῆς σιδηρᾶς. καὶ ἡμᾶς ἐξήγαγεν ὁ θεὸς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, ἐκ τῆς καμίνου τῆς σιδηρᾶς«, μάλιστα κατὰ τὸν νοήσαντα τὸ γεγραμμένον μένον ἐν τῇ Ἀποκαλύψει Ἰωάννου, ὅτι ὁ τόπος τόπος «ὅπου κύριος αὐ- τῶν ἐσταυρώθη καλεῖται πνευματικῶς Σόδομα καὶ Αἴγυπτος. εἰ γὰρ «πνευματικῶς καλεῖται Αίγυπτος«, οὐκ οὐκ ἔστιν δὲ αὕτη ἡ Αἵγυπτος ἡ πνευματικῶς καλουμένη Αἴγυπτος, αἰσθητὴ γάρ, δῆλον ὅτι ἐὰν νοήσῃς τὴν τὴν πνευματικῶς καλουμένην Αἴγυπτον καὶ ἐξέλθῃς ἀπ’ αὐτῆς, σὺ εἶ ὁ ἐξελθὼν «ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἐκ τῆς καμίνου τῆς σιδηρᾶς« καὶ λέγεται πρὸς σέ· «ἀκούσατε τῆς φωνῆς μου καὶ ποιήσατε κατὰ πάντα« ταυτα.

English follows Erich Klostermann, Origenes Werke III (GCS, 1901). A second transcription of that same edition (First1KGreek TEI) was checked; where the TEI drops or garbles a line, the page image wins. This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.

Where the prints differ

  • Homily 1.1 — The TEI omits Ἑβραῖον. English follows the GCS page image: Jonah is “a Hebrew prophet.”
  • Homily 1.5 — The TEI dropped Ἰσαάκ. English follows the GCS page image: Isaac born of promise.
  • Homily 1.11 — The TEI/OCR of this line is garbled. English follows the GCS page image and the quoted verse: “I have sanctified you.”
  • Homily 3.2 — The TEI gaps Matthew 5:45 (sun on the evil and [gap]; rain on [gap] and the unjust). English follows the Gospel wording.
