Every nation puts the Christian word on trial

And still you will understand this way how 'he is judged and examined in all the earth.' Who then does not judge the Christian word? Who among the nations, even simply, does not scrutinize it? Who among the Jews does not speak the things about Christians? Who among the Greeks? Who among the philosophers? Who among private persons? Everywhere Jesus is judged and decided about; and by some he is condemned, by others he is not condemned. If he is not condemned, he is accepted; you open the windows to him, he enters to you; you believe in him, he dines with you.

But if you do not accept when you hear about Christianity, you have done nothing other than condemn Jesus as lying, as leading humans astray, as not speaking truly—through not having believed the word he teaches. 'As whom did you bear me, a man judged and examined in all the earth?' As many as wholly disbelieve condemn him; as many as do not disbelieve but are of two minds about him are examining about him. Jesus suffers two things among humans: by the unbelieving he is condemned, by the double-souled he is examined. If you put on 'the image of the heavenly' after putting off 'the image of the dusty,' you are not earth condemning him, nor are you earth in which he is condemned, nor are you still earth examining him.

English follows Erich Klostermann, Origenes Werke III (GCS, 1901). A second transcription of that same edition (First1KGreek TEI) was checked; where the TEI drops or garbles a line, the page image wins. This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.

Where the prints differ

  • Homily 1.1 — The TEI omits Ἑβραῖον. English follows the GCS page image: Jonah is “a Hebrew prophet.”
  • Homily 1.5 — The TEI dropped Ἰσαάκ. English follows the GCS page image: Isaac born of promise.
  • Homily 1.11 — The TEI/OCR of this line is garbled. English follows the GCS page image and the quoted verse: “I have sanctified you.”
  • Homily 3.2 — The TEI gaps Matthew 5:45 (sun on the evil and [gap]; rain on [gap] and the unjust). English follows the Gospel wording.
