Eyes of the Lord and Virtues
Lord, your eyes are fixed on faith, as 'the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,' for they turn from the unrighteous, so the eyes of the Lord are on faith, turning from unbelief. Therefore, the one who understands rightly says in prayer, 'Lord, your eyes are on faith.' What is written here is 'Lord, your eyes are on faith.' Since 'if a wise word is heard by a man of understanding, he will praise it and add to it,' see how much the Lord does, 'your eyes are on faith.' Paul says, 'Now faith, hope, love remain, but the greatest of these is love.' As the eyes of the Lord are on faith, so also on hope, so also on love.
Since the Spirit is power, purity, and self-control, the eyes of the Lord are on love, so the eyes of the Lord are on power, so the eyes of the Lord are on self-control... the eyes of the Lord on justice. Thus, the eyes of the Lord on all virtues. If you wish to have the rays of the Lord's intelligible eyes shine upon you, take up the virtues. And it will be as 'Lord, your eyes are on faith,' so 'Lord, your eyes' on each thing you acquire. And if you are so great, as the Lord's eyes shine upon you, you will say, 'The light of your face has been shown upon us, Lord.'

English follows Erich Klostermann, Origenes Werke III (GCS, 1901). A second transcription of that same edition (First1KGreek TEI) was checked; where the TEI drops or garbles a line, the page image wins. This is a reading translation for study, not a new critical edition of the Greek. Homilies that survive only in Jerome’s Latin are not on this page yet. When they are, they will be marked at those homilies.

Where the prints differ

- Homily 1.11 — The TEI/OCR of this line is garbled. English follows the GCS page image and the quoted verse: “I have sanctified you.”
- Homily 3.2 — The TEI gaps Matthew 5:45 (sun on the evil and [gap]; rain on [gap] and the unjust). English follows the Gospel wording.
