Even if the completion was clear, what would they not have done? If the Son is the wisdom of the Father, and if what he himself knows wisdom does not know, he is found again not knowing — or else his nature is better than his wisdom, and the simple God is found composite and unlike himself. Yet not-knowing and knowing do not make a difference of essence, any more than they do among humans; ignorance is a passion, which the Son does not have, but he is God by nature and, even on the heretics’ terms, unreceptive of passions. But if all that is the Son’s is the Father’s and all that is the Father’s is the Son’s, either both do not know, or the Father knows and the Son knows as having by nature all that is the Father’s. For he does not say this about lordship over creatures; yet whenever scripture names “Father,” it signifies the whole of the divinity thought and worshipped in the holy Trinity.
